All students invited to attend events of NPHC Greek weeks

Although they make up a small percentage of UTM’s Greek community, members of African-American fraternities and sororities are active in service and scholarship, as well as social activities on and around campus.

There are nine Greek organizations in the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the national governing body for traditionally black fraternities and sororities. Of the nine, six are represented at UTM.

These include Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Alpha Kappa Alpha sororities and Omega Psi Phi, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Beta Sigma fraternities.

According to a Purdue Web site on NPHC traditions, their affiliate organizations recognize the social aspect of Greek life, but the primary purpose and focus of member organizations remains community awareness and action through educational, economic and cultural service activities.

The Purdue site also says “the council’s purpose is to promote unity and expose members to the ‘service for life’ philosophy and foster leadership development and scholarship.”

Furthermore, the NPHC provides a forum for participation and interaction among the members of affiliate organizations and the organizations themselves to help provide a stronger unified voice and a stronger unified body.

The site also mentions that “a lifetime commitment to the goals and ideals of each respective organization is stressed.

Each fraternity and sorority that is part of the NPHC will have their own week in which they will sponsor different events and presentations about specific topics.

The spring NPHC Greek weeks are as follows:

Delta Sigma Theta on March 22-28,

Kappa Alpha Psi on March 29 through April 4,

Zeta Phi Beta on April 12-18,

Phi Beta Sigma on April 19-25,

Omega Psi Phi on April 26-May 2.

Each week will contain different events and programs that every UTM student, regardless of ethnic background, is encouraged to participate in.
