All-Sing raises money for Camp Celebration charity

Billboard hits from the past 50 years was presented from some of the campus’ most prominent Greek life during this year’s All-Sing.

The theme of the 42nd annual All-Sing, presented by Alpha Phi Omega, was Top Billboard Hits. All proceeds raised from this event went to benefit Camp Celebration.

Camp Celebration is a one week camp for children and adults with mental retardation. The camp will run from May 5 until June 6 at Camp Pincrest in Lagrange, Tenn. It is run by volunteers and was founded in 1992.

First to grace the stage was Sigma Phi Epsilon. They looked immaculate in their simple black shirts and pants with white bow ties and vests.

Vocally, this fraternity would have had the other fraternities shaking in their letters because their performance could not have been any better. These balanced men sang billboard hits from the Motown era of music.

SigEp’s song selections included War, Shaft Theme, My Girl and Let’s Get It On, just to name a few.

On stage first in the sorority division were the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi with their tribute to the 60s.

Though their performance lacked enthusiasm, they did an excellent job vocally and looked cute as buttons in their poodle skirts, white tops and cat glasses.

The sisters of ADPi’s performance included Breakin’ Up is Hard to Do, Hit the Road Jack, Rockin’ Robin and Heat Wave.

Next on stage in the sorority division were the sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi. They did a collection of Billboard hits from the 1960s to present.

They came on stage with an undeniable energy wearing all black and won the crowd over with their strong vocals and stage presence.

Their performance included Independent Women, Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, R.E.S.P.E.C.T. and What a Feeling.

After the sisters of AOPi, the sisters of Chi Omega performed selections from the power house girl group of the 1960s, the Supremes.

Wearing attention-grabbing red dresses, they performed in a way that lead Supreme, Diana Ross, would have been proud. Everything was in place for these ladies as they belted out hits like I Hear a Symphony, Stop, in the Name of Love, Can’t Hurry Love and Baby Love.

Last performance of the night were the sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha. With their black jumpsuits and flashy colored belts, they rocked the audience with songs by women in music from the 1980s.

They could have been more competitive but their performance was still entertaining.

Their song selection included Total Eclipse of the Heart, Time After Time, Mickey and Express Yourself. Their song selection was more difficult than their competition, but was nonetheless entertaining.

Throughout the show, as a space filler, Mark Nizer performed his juggling/comedy routine. His routine, entitled “The Juggler Your Mother Warned You About,” included him juggling machetes, various balls, flaming torches and various other objects. He made cracks about his life and got the audience involved.

“Everyone was up there having fun and doing their best. It’s a lot of hard work but very fun to be involved in,” said Ryan Hartley, a sophomore Criminal Justice major from Westmoreland.

At the end of the competition, a $2500 check was presented to Camp Celebration, with Shannon Deal and Mike Munkel accepting the check on behalf of the nonprofit organization.

A very special award was presented to Elizabeth Craig by David Belote, assistant vice chancellor for Student Affairs. The award, the Beth Malone Outstanding UTM Student Employee Award, was presented to Craig who is a Night Supervisor Coordinator in Department of Public Safety.

This year’s winners in the fraternity division was Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Taking second in the sorority division were the sisters of Alpha Delta Pi.

First place overall went to the sisters of Alpha Omicron Pi. Judges favorite was Chi Omega.
