All-Sing funds will help local children

UTM's annual All-Sing competition will celebrate its 44th anniversary at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at the Fieldhouse. All-Sing, a musical event sponsored by service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega, will feature six contestants this year - Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Delta Pi and Alpha Omicron Pi in the sorority division, and Pi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon in the fraternity division.

The theme for this year's competition is songs from Disney. The philanthropy chosen to receive the proceeds from this year's event is the Weakley/Obion office of the Exchange Club/Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse.

Alpha Phi Omega has been in charge of All-Sing for many years. Group members choose the theme of the show and vote on song selection. Also, philanthropies who wish to receive proceeds must interview with the group, which then votes on a philanthropy and sends its choice to the group's advisers for approval.

"We are so pleased to have been chosen as a recipient of the proceeds from such a great event," said Tracy Simmons, Carl Perkins Center program director for Weakley, Gibson and Carroll counties. "The funds that we receive will be directly utilized toward services offered to families in Weakley and Obion counties. These services provide in-home parent training, group parenting sessions and child advocacy aid."

The date of All-Sing also ties in this year with National Child Abuse Awareness Month, which has been observed in April since 1983. According to the National Committee for Prevention of Child Abuse, nearly 3 million cases of abuse are reported nationally each year, including over 38,000 cases in Tennessee. According to the Carl Perkins Center Web site, more Tennessee children suffer neglect than other forms of maltreatment.
