All-Sing benefits local charities, Chi Omega takes top award

Alpha Phi Omega and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia presented the 45th Annual All Sing this past Saturday night in the UTM Field House. This year’s theme was gospel, and it featured an array of gospel music, featuring everything from hymns to contemporary Christian.

The money raised from this year’s All-Sing went to Weakley County Habitat for Humanity.

“We are happy to be the charity for All Sing,” says Corey Stout, representing Habitat. “Thank you for the money you all have given for us to be able to put roofs over families’ heads’ in Weakley County.”

Another Habitat representative and UTM math professor, Dr. John Schommer, thanked the audience for their contributions. “After Hurricane Katrina hit, many local charities held their breaths to see what support would be given. Remember that our neighbors here in Weakley County need help, too.”

The president of Alpha Phi Omega and some alumni dedicated this year’s performances to the late Jodi Fleming Price and her husband, Jeremy Price. Fleming Price was a former President and advisor of the organization. The couple was killed in the tornadoes that ripped through West Tennessee on April 2. The audience took a moment of silence to remember all those affected by this recent disaster.

“We want to honor Jodi and Jeremy as we sing tonight,” said Christy Reed, Alpha Phi Omega advisor and friend of Jodi. She later told the crowd to “be thankful through everything.”

Alpha Omicron Pi took home first place in the sorority division. Chi Omega took home second place and the “Judge’s Choice Award.” The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon took home first place in the fraternity division.

The sisters of Alpha Delta Pi kicked off the competition in their black dresses with a blue ribbon to give the effect of an empire waist. Before they began, they dedicated their performance to fellow recently deceased sister and UTM alumni, Melinda Garrett. They began by singing “Amazing Grace” while sitting on the risers. They continued with songs such as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Go Rest High on That Mountain”, and singing while signing “How Great Thou Art”. They ended their show with a melody and unique rendition of “Amazing Grace” and “Praise His Holy Name!”

Alpha Omicron Pi was second to perform. They were dressed in rose red blouses and black dress pants. They began their show by singing, “Shine on Us.” Their voices gave powerful performances of “Lord, Most High” and an a capella version of the great hymn “It Is Well.” They ended their show in a cross formation on the risers. The sisters of Chi Omega took the stage next, clad in cardinal red dresses with choir robes in red with a yellow lining. They began and ended their performance with an upbeat and energetic version of “He Never Failed Me Yet.” They also performed “Keep the Candle Burning” and sang while signing “Go Light Your World.”

The sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha took the stage after an intermission. They dressed in black dress pants, blue blouses, with short-sleeved black shrugs. They delivered great performances of some classic hymns such as “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” and “The Old Rugged Cross.” They ended their performance by singing and signing “Because He Lives.”

The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon were the only group in the fraternity division. They took the stage in green and white classic choir robes. In their deep voices, they began with “Come, Now is the Time to Worship.” They gave an upbeat version of “Wade in the Water” and “Hale, Hale, Hallelujah.” They ended their show with “Awesome God.”

While the scores were being tallied, David Belote presented senior English major, Jason Adkins, with the Beth Malone Student Employee Award. Adkins served as the technical assistant in the Hortense-Parrish Writing Center on campus. He won a $500 cash prize and a plaque to recognize his achievement.
